General Principal to add another National to the CV
Thank god for Irish racing. The behind closed doors meetings are one of the only things keeping sports fans from reaching 100% insanity, as many are already at 95%. The show is still on, and Downpatrick host a seven-race card on Sunday, headed by the €50,000 Ulster National at 3.10.
Gordon Elliot plays a strong hand with six in the lineup, headed by Cheb De Kerviniou, the mount of 11/1Rachael Blackmore. He ran a cracker the last day in the Leinster National and just got pipped at the line by Cap York, and that will surely bring him on for this test. A chance is taken though on 2018 Irish Grand National hero General Principal. He was running poorly early in the season, but his last two runs have shown signs of serious promise and there seems to be some sort of fire left in the belly. He was fourth in the Leinster National the last day and a repeat of that run will surely see him in the mix here.
In the 2.10 WKD rated hurdle Charles Byrnes’ Wajaaha seems to be the one to side with. He was very impressive at Leopardstown the last day on only his second start for Byrnes’, and his new trainer seems to be getting the right tunes out of his new recruitment. Gordon Elliot’s The Very Man poses the main threat, but he has to concede 5lb to Byrnes’ charge, and a chance is taking on Wajaaha making it back to back wins.
Many of us will be cooped up inside for the foreseeable future, but at least the power of live racing is keeping us from reaching total insanity.
Wajaaha – WKD Hurdle – 2.10 – 5/2
General Principal – Ulster National – 3.10 – 11/1
